Please join us for our Journey & Discovery/Open House on Saturday, March 24th,2012 for a hands on experience.
“Come experience a day in the life of a Montessori Student from our Toddler to Elementary Program.”
The program is from 9:00am to Noon and is intended for parents only.
If you can’t make it to Journey & Discovery, feel free to stop by to take a tour of our school & meet the director.

School News
February was a very fun month at SMS filled with lots of cultural enrichment.
To celebrate Lunar/Chinese New Year our elementary children went on a fieldtrip to tour Chinatown Los Angeles, and enjoy a traditional chinese lunch and a show.
We also enjoyed a wonderful Lion/Dragon Dance performance at our school given by the Chan Family Choy Le Fut Kung Fu School. The children loved the show & loved ” feeding the dragon”.
In celebration of Black History Month we enjoyed a show by Nana Yaw Asiedu, a performer- master drum instructor of African culture from the IIeayan Cultural Institute of Higher Learning. We all enjoyed the stories, songs & dances & the drums of course!!
The elementary children held a bake sale to raise funds for the Tarahumara Children’s Hospital Fund. Proceeds from the bake sale as well as all the generous donations from our families totaled $1430.00.

We know the hospital & the Tarahumara Community really appreciates your support :)

Presidents Day Holiday & MS Walk
Dear SMS Families.
As a reminder we are closed Friday 17th and Monday 20th in observance of President’s Weekend.
Also please save the date for our 2nd annual MS walk at Legoland on Sunday, April 22nd 2012. More details to follow.

Upcoming Events in February
Dear SMS Parents,
We would like to invite you to some upcoming events at our school.
Chinese New Year Celebration:
On Wednesday, February 1st @10:30am we will celebrate the start of the Lunar Calendar/Chinese New Year 2012-Year of the Dragon by having a traditional dragon/lion dance performance. Please have your child bring in $4 by Friday to help with the cost of the performance and feed the dragon. In the spirit of Chinese New Year please have your child wear red that day.
Black History Month Celebration:
On Wednesday, February 8th we are having a presentation by Nano Yaw Asiedu.The program is a performance/lecture/ demonstration on drums from the African diaspora, entailing historical data of the instruments (which instruments and songs come from which countries), terms from African languages (including translation of the meaning of songs), hands-on audience participation, stories, and songs.
We hope you will come join us celebrate these two wonderful events :)

Spanish Lessons
My First Spanish Class Registration Form
Class is held every Wednesday from 2:30pm – 3:10pm (level 1) and 3:15 – 3:55 (level 2). 40 minutes each group.
Cost: $60/month
*Please make payments out to Miss Adriana Sanchez
*There will not be refunds for missed classes due to your child’s absence. Payments are due on the 5th of every month. If you need to remove your child from the program, you must give a 2 week written notice.

Music Classes
In these enjoyable group lessons, the children will develop an enthusiasm for and familiarity with music. They will learn to read rhythms and begin to read notes. Through ear training they will start to develop a “good ear” and sing on pitch. With rhythm instruments they will experience playing rhythms and, eventually, following their own part. Through our activities, they will learn dynamics (soft, loud and in between) and work together to make harmonious sound. Through listening to samples of music, they will learn to recognize various instruments and styles of music.

Little Stars Dance Class
Conveniently offering dance classes in Ballet & Tap at Scripps Montessori for children between the ages of 2½ – 5 years of age.
Classes are held every Tuesday from 2:30 – 3:15 and 3:15 – 4:00
Tuition is priced at $40/mo
(Please remember, classes are not pro-rated)
All children need ballet and tap shoes (available at Payless Shoe Stores)
